Energy and Water Reporting Benchmarking (EWRB)

Benchmarking is the process of documenting your building’s energy and water use and comparing its performance to other similar buildings in order to identify opportunities for improvement.

Understanding Energy and water reporting benchmarking

Energy and water usage can represent some of the largest operating costs in your building. Ontario’s Regulation O.Reg. 506/18 requires large buildings to report their annual energy and water use to the Ministry of Energy by July 1st of each year. Ontario’s Energy and Water Reporting and Benchmarking (EWRB) initiative is aimed at monitoring and improving energy and water efficiency. Companies and organizations may be required to report their energy and water usage, and benchmarking involves comparing this data to established standards or industry averages to assess performance.

If your building has a gross floor area of 50,000 square feet or more, you may be required to report.

Mandatory vs. voluntary

Buildings smaller than 50,000 square feet can still report as a tool to gauge their performance. Municipalities are currently approving municipal by-laws that will enforce fines for non-compliant organizations!
